I have to admit that I don’t eat Mexican very often, which is crazy because they have many vegan-friendly options and some really exciting flavours. It was my boyfriend’s brother’s birthday recently and their family tradition is to go to Fiesta Mexicana, a Mexican restaurant, to celebrate. This year I joined them.
Established in Kent in 2007 Fiesta Mexicana offers a mix of authentic Mexican-Cuban flavours with a dash of London’s special character combining fresh, healthy, local produce with the unique flavours of sliced green jalapenos, flour tortillas and many more from Mexico. Not only an eatery, the vibrant La Cubana Cocktail Bar offers a range of vibrant classic cocktails and mocktails. Not forgetting the in-your-face decor which gets you in the mood!
We were greeted by the friendly staff and taken to our table, after browsing the drinks menu I ordered a pitcher of Virgin Sangria (because I was driving) made up of cranberry juice, strawberry syrup, mango syrup, lime, fresh fruit, orange, and lemonade. I found it to be refreshing and tasty, and I particularly enjoyed the glass decorations!
The vegan menu offers a few classic Mexican dish options. My boyfriend and I are both vegan and we decided to pick different starters and share so we could try 2 dishes. We ordered the garlic bread with vegan cheese and salsa, and the classic nachos served with vegan cheese, salsa, pico de gallo salad & guacamole.
Both of the starters were satisfying and flavourful. It had been a long time since I had had garlic bread with cheese (yum!) and you really can’t beat a good plate of nachos which was generously covered in accompaniments (although I could have done without the cucumber, which I dislike). I also enjoyed the colourful plates on which the food was served!
For our mains, I decided upon the Vegetable fajita which was brought sizzling to the table with warm tortillas vegan cheese, salsa, pico de gallo salad, guacamole. Steve chose the Chimichanga – deep fried tortilla filled with vegetables and refried beans also served with vegan cheese, salsa, pico de gallo salad, guacamole, with a choice of potato.
I have always loved making up my own fajitas, it’s just fun to pick and choose your fillings and make something yummy rolled up in a soft, warm tortilla. Just be careful not to overfill it as it tends to fall out the other end! A chimichanga is a deep-fried burrito, Steve’s one came filled with veggies and refried beans alongside chips (his chosen potato). He loved it and, in fact, hasn’t shut up about it since!
As well as great food the service was very friendly and helpful. They are particularly good at celebrating birthdays and had Steve’s brother up on the dance floor after bringing him his birthday cake!
Would I return? Definitely, hopefully, next time someone else will drive because I really want to try some of their cocktails! I award them 5 out of 5 stars.
