If you are visiting Cambridgeshire in the East of England then one spot you shouldn’t miss out on seeing is Peterborough. With many sights such as the stunning Peterborough Cathedral, Elton Hall and Burleigh House; there is plenty to explore in this city.
Just as important as the sights is the City’s foodie offering, with Peterborough having a fantastic selection of places to eat and drink from bars and pubs to late-night entertainment and fine dining restaurants. There is also a wide range of cultural cuisines available including spicy Mexican, fragrant Thai, stylish Italian or hearty English dishes.
For some ideas for restaurants to visit in Peterborough, I have compiled my top 3 venues in the hopes of inspiring you should you explore this lovely city.
In the café category, my top choice would have to be The Old Copper Kettle on North Street, Crowland – about a 20-minute drive from the centre of the City this tea room and shop has an excellent reputation for friendly service, delicious food and great atmosphere. I can’t recommend the bacon and stilton toastie enough served on granary bread. The only reason you’d regret choosing this from the menu is you might not have room for a slice of one of their purely indulgent cakes!
If you love Indian and Nepalese cuisine then you can’t beat the Gurkha Lounge which is found in the Hampton area. It was the first eatery of its kind in the area, offering the best of unique Gurkha Nepalese and Indian cuisine born in the Himalayas. This cuisine has become a favourite throughout the world. The menu is generous, from the nation’s favourite chicken tikka masala to more unusual dishes like bhutuwa (a traditional Nepalese speciality cooked with dried red chilli & crushed garlic) and an excellent range of vegetarian options. With rave reviews from customers enjoying the food, luxurious atmosphere and service this is a must-visit.
If you are seeking a quaint venue for a night out, then the Palmerston Arms on Oundle Road might be the one for you. This is a ‘proper’ pub that really knows its beer; with its temperature-controlled ‘ale room’ and an impressive array of superb beers served from the cask. If you are not a big beer drinker, like me, then ask the landlord for one of their ciders. The Palmerston Arms, or ‘Palmy’ to the locals, only offers lite bites but luckily there are a number of restaurants in the centre of Peterborough only 10 or so minutes’ walk away.
