Having only visited Switzerland once before (for work), I jumped at the chance to spend a weekend in Zurich last month. I couldn’t have picked a better time as the weather was perfect – sunny and surprisingly warm for March!I decided to stay in a Airbnb in the centre of the city, close to the main station and the major sights.
Making the most of the sunshine on Saturday, I took a leisurely walk alongside the Limmat river through the old town, down to the shores of Lake Zurich.
Amongst the spires and chalets along the river, the Grossmünster protestant church is well worth a visit. It’s twin towers are incredibly striking, and visitors are able to climb to the top for an even better view over the city.
Similarly, just on the opposite river bank, Fraumünster Church has beautiful architecture to explore. I was lucky enough to catch a fresh fruit and vegetable market here, offering tourists and locals the chance to buy local produce.
After admiring the viewpoints at the edge of the lake, I decided to hop onboard a ferry and take a 1.5 hr round trip for a different perspective (8.80 CHF for an adult, or included with any ZVV zone tickets).
I recommend queueing in advance of the ferry arrival time, as at the weekend they get very busy! The ferries do have a bar/restaurant at the weekend, so you can enjoy a glass of wine with the stunning scenery.
The views onboard were truly spectacular. In the distance, snow-capped mountains were visible in front of us, and the lush greenery and typical Swiss chalets lined the shore.
The lake is popular with all manner of water sports and fishing activities, as well as offering parks and small beaches for those looking for something a little more sedate.
Upon returning to land, I popped into a local shop and spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying some local beer on the edge of the lake, just in front of the opera house. This is clearly a popular spot for the locals in good weather, as several hot dog stands and drinks stalls were open and enjoying excellent foot traffic!
On Sunday, I decided to explore the university district and after climbing more stairs than I had bargained for, I was rewarded with a lovely view across the city.
Amongst the university buildings you can find archaeological, art, zoological and palaeontological museums, many of which are free and a great way to spend an afternoon.
Before catching my flight home, I made sure to pick up a couple of bottles of Swiss wine at the airport. Unfortunately Swiss wine is not exported outside of the country, so I recommend that you do the same, at least to tide you over until your next trip!
