Whether you’ve been starting to enjoy movie nights as a family, you have started dating someone who particularly enjoys cinema, or you and a friend or two have started working your way through a list of the greats, you want to make sure that you can do it in real comfort. Here, we’re going to look at everything you need to create a home cinema in your own place, but without having to invest thousands upon thousands to make it a reality.
Ensure somewhere comfy to be
The first thing you want to make sure is that the space has adequate and comfortable seating for everyone who is attending. If you have to bring out the wooden kitchen chairs, then it’s not very likely that you and the other movie watchers are going to be able to really sit back and relax. To that end, you might want to look at the hygge style, which is all about bringing comfort and cosiness into the home with a relatively simplicity to it. If nothing else works, you even look at getting some beanbag chairs as a relatively cost-effective way to add some extra comfy seating that can be easily stored away when you’re done with them.
Create the right lighting
Depending on how you like your movies, you may prefer to have the room completely dark so that you can be engaged with the screen fully. However, if there’s popcorn, snacks, or most dangerously, glasses of wine, you really want people to be able to see where they are reaching. As such, you might want to add a light dimmer to your room so that you can set the ambience just right. Or, it might be a little more convenient to simply get some accent lighting so that you can switch the overhead light off to avoid distracting yourself from the movie, but still be able to see where you’re putting your hands, allowing you to avoid any nasty spills.
Access to the right stuff
Back in the day, it used to be as simple as getting a DVD or a Blu-ray and putting it in your collection. While you still can do that, of course, most of us are streaming through the internet. However, it often happens that you find that something once available to you is suddenly missing from your favourite streaming library. How do you find where to watch Harry Potter in its series entirety when that happens? Rather than having to pay for a host of different streaming services, you might be able to access what’s missing with the help of a VPN. These can allow you to tap into things like Netflix but from a different country, which often tends to have different shows and movies available.
Get the sound right
If you’re working with the speakers from your TV, then don’t be surprised if you or the other film watchers have to turn on the subtitles to fully understand what’s going on. Many people aren’t aware of this, but a lot of movies and even some prestige TV shows are now mixed with the surround sound setup in mind. As such, they can be a lot easier to hear if you have your speakers layered out. Typically, it’s best to have a speaker from the front and two speakers behind on either side, so it creates a sort of sound triangle for them to project into. Creating a surround sound setup is nowhere near as expensive as it used to be, too.
Get the snacks at the ready
For some people, the snacks are just as important an experience of going to the cinema as seeing the movie itself. You can take the time to bake, buy, or otherwise prepare all sorts of goodies to welcome your guests to your home cinema, but nowadays there are relatively inexpensive and helpful popcorn makers that can allow you to serve it just like you would get it at the cinema. Of course, it’s your home cinema, you don’t have to go with popcorn alone, but having one of these ready can make it easy for you or your guests to whip up a bowl of popcorn in no time.
You can greatly elevate your home movie-watching experience with the tips above, and you don’t have to have the budget of the rich and famous to do it. The difference it can make when you’re really able to engage with the movie on a new level is worth it.
