Hygge is the Scandinavian way of living, yet it is enjoyed by people worldwide. And is it so easy to see why, because the Scandinavians always seem so happy! If you are looking to introduce Hygge into your home, but don’t know where to start, here are some tips to help. You can make it as simple as you like but remember to take notice of the details because it makes a difference in how you introduce Hygge into your home. Your home or your shelter is the number one place to go to feel safe and happy.
Atmosphere
Think about the atmosphere in your room. The best thing to do this is to think about the lighting. Dim the lights, switch on fairy lights and light the candles. Although if you light candles, you should also make sure the room is aired out too. Place some blankets on the sofa in the lounge, on the end of your bed and anywhere that you sit. Blankets, especially fleece ones, make it cosy for you. And they help to keep you warm in the cold evenings.
Presence In The Room
Even though you might be ‘in the room’ are you actually there? When you want to relax, you need to get rid of the other distractions that are part of everyday life. Switch your phone off and enjoy being in the moment. Speak to your friends and family and find other ways to relax. Every time you look at your phone, you get drawn into other people’s problems online. You need to relax and have some time by yourself or with your family.
Pleasure And Enjoyment
Think about what makes you happy. What are your guilty pleasures? Coffee, cookies, chocolate and cake are among the things that some people enjoy when they are relaxing, so add your pleasurable things to a hygge box. Then get it out when you want to cosy up in front of the fire or enjoy the summer evenings.
Equality And Togetherness
Hygge is about working together to create a calm and cosy lifestyle. There is no ‘Me’ in Hygge, but there is ‘We’. If you work as a team, then things always seem less stressful. Think about the saying, two heads are better than one. Working equally as a team also brings you closer together, which then helps you to relax more.
Gratitude And Thankfulness
Be thankful for everything that you have right now and be happy with it. This might be as good as it gets so enjoy the moment. Live as happy as you can be and remember those special and magical moments. You have your family, your pets and your friends surrounding you, be grateful for the love they share.
Get Comfortable
No matter what work you do, whether you are a stay at home parent or you go out to work. You need some downtime to relax and recharge your batteries. Switch yourself off from work and the kids, by closing the bathroom door and taking a bath surrounded by candles. Put the kids to bed and relax on the sofa with blankets, a glass of wine and a book. Turn the lighting down and light some candles.
Harmony And Balance
In order to achieve Hygge in your home, you need to restore harmony and balance. Life is a competition over who can be the best parent or the best child. Your family and friends already love you for who you are. Do not brag about your achievements, especially when someone else is struggling with theirs. Causing drama can easily upset the balance, so choose not to talk about certain subjects, especially politics.
You do not have to create all of this in one go, you can do small bits at a time. But once you do create an area of your home to enjoy Hygge you will not look back.
