Having a dog is expensive, and you should consider this properly when thinking about adding a pooch to your family. Starting with the fee for your pupper either from a breeder or adoption fees from a rescue, then there are vet bills, food bills, toys and treats as well as thinking about who will look after your dog if you go away.

One thing that you can make cheaper is treats. If your dog loves biscuits as much as mine do you’ll be going through a fair few boxes every week or so and the cost can easily add up. You might be surprised to know that making your own dog biscuits can be quick, simple and much cheaper than forking out for the ones at the pet store.

This recipe is for tasty strawberry and oat biscuits. Oats are a good source of fibre, making it great for dogs with bowel irregularity issues, and also safe for dogs with wheat intolerances (like one of my labradors who can’t have gluten). These treats include peanut butter which most dogs go nuts over (see what I did there?), but do keep in mind that peanut butter is high in calories so don’t go letting your furbaby eat the whole supply at once!

Ingredients/supplies:

  • 1 ¼ cup of oats
  • ⅓ cup xylitol-free peanut butter
  • ½ cup strawberries (chopped)
  • 2.4 inch paw print cookie cutter

Directions:

  1. To start, preheat your oven to 175°C
  2. Use parchment paper to line a baking sheet
  3. Put the oats, strawberries and peanut butter in a food processor or high speed blender and pulse to form a solid dough. You can use a potato masher to bring it together if it doesn’t quiet come together in the blender.
  4. When you have the right consistency roll out the dough onto a clean, flat surface.
  5. Cut out your biscuit shapes and pop onto a baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes at 175°C
  7. Place your baked reats onto a baking rack and leave to cool.
  8. These yummy treats can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
