Your parents will inevitably age. It happens to us all over the years. One day you feel young and then the next you wake up and suddenly you’re 70 and starting to feel like you are ageing. Watching your parents get older isn’t always easy, especially if they rely on you to do different things for them.
While every family situation is different, there are a few things that everyone can do to help support their parents as they get older. Things like looking into supported living may help (if required), ensuring you are there for them to talk to and be open will mean a lot, as well as taking care of any financial matters.
To help point you in the right direction, we have put together a brief guide on supporting your parents as they get older.
Have open conversations together
No matter your age, having open conversations with your loved ones, such as your parents, is extremely useful and beneficial to everyone’s mental health. Allowing your parents to be open to you and discuss their struggles as they age may take a weight off their shoulders, as well as show you ways in which you can support them. They may have recently been struggling but not told you, or you may not have realised that something has been bothering them.
Looking after their finances
As you get older, keeping on top of day-to-day chores can be difficult, with certain things being missed. One area in which a lot of older people struggle is keeping on top of their finances and understanding how new tech, when it comes to money, works. A way to support your parents could be by taking over their finances and being the one who looks after them. This could be a big weight removed from your parents’ shoulders, and something you can easily do.
Offer practical help without taking over
Supporting your parents doesn’t mean stripping away their independence. Many older adults want to stay in control of their lives as long as possible. Try to be as helpful as you can be, but only where needed. There may be things they can still do, so let them do it. Then there will be things they aren’t able to do, and this is where you can get involved and support. As they get older, there will be more and more responsibilities which they will slowly pass over to you. By being there, they will feel relaxed and open to handing you these tasks, instead of stressing and struggling to complete them themselves.
It’s never nice seeing your parents age and become less independent. But, there is plenty you can do to support them and make ageing seem that little bit easier. What support have you been offering to your parents as they get older? Is there anything missing in our guide that you think we should have included? Which of the above tips did you find most useful?
