If you’ve already read my previous posts, A Tour of the Venetian Islands, Review: Hotel Danieli and the Doge’s Palace, you’ll know that to celebrate my friend’s birthday, we took a trip to Venice for a long weekend of sight-seeing and indulgence.
As well as the glorious sights of the islands and palace, we walked all around the city, absorbing its culture, souvenir shopping and tasting as much wine as we could! Some further highlights of our trip were St. Mark’s Square (with it’s glorious Basilica), wandering around the beautifully scenic canals and hopping on and off the water bus – a cheap and stunning way to travel across the lagoon.
First – the water bus. An easy, well signposted walk from the airport terminal will take you to the docks, allowing you to pay for private hire or join the queue for the next public water bus.
Wanting to save our cash for the culinary delights of the city, we opted for the latter and soon we were onboard. Having nabbed some prime seats with a great view, we settled back to enjoy this sedate method of transport.

A return will set you back €27 each, which is significantly cheaper than the private water taxis, and dropped us off right in front of our hotel after a lovely laid-back cruise across the lagoon.

Next, we admired many bridges and canals throughout our weekend in Venice, so I heartily recommend you set aside some time to explore yourself – you never know what you might find!

Finally, no trip to Venice is complete without a visit to St. Mark’s Square and the Basilica. Although crowded with tourists, it’s still worth setting aside some time to enjoy the sights and local museums, however be prepared to pay steep prices to sit in a coffee shop or restaurant on the square!

Happy travels!
